Eight Days of Luke is a wonderful reworking of Norse mythology – it won’t take readers familiar with Norse myths very long at all to figure out who Luke, Mr Wedding or Mr Chew really are, and this knowledge makes the book a lot more fun.
But this is also a book that gives Diana Wynne Jones the opportunity to write one of her most brilliant. Furthermore, it seems clear that whereas Matthew and Mark excluded the days of the two terminal events (the prophecy and the transfiguration), Luke included both days, as well as the six intermediate days, and thus mentioned that the two events were eight days apart.
Even today, when people rehearse something they witnessed a few days earlier. Eight Days of Luke has a lot of the humour one finds in other of Jones' books, especially during the family quarrels. But the humour aside, I found this book to be quite average when compared to others of Jones' works.
